A Letter from Medical Director, Ted Wirecki, M.D.

October 15, 2018

Dear Colleague,

TMS Center of Colorado is pleased to announce that we are the first in Denver—and among the first in the United States—to offer deep TMS treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in adults.

In August, the FDA cleared Brainsway™ Deep TMS™ therapy for OCD treatment. Finally, your patients have access to the first-ever, non-invasive and non-pharmacological treatment option for this disorder.

As you are aware, treating OCD may require high doses of antidepressant medication(s). Many patients have difficulty tolerating the side effects of drug treatment, and studies have shown that up to 40% of patients are not (or are no longer) responding to first-line treatment with medication or psychotherapy. For these patients, Deep TMS therapy offers a viable alternative.
The FDA clearance was based on a multi-center study of 11 medical centers (9 in the United States, 1 in Canada and 1 in Israel). The study included only patients who were treatment-resistant and included twenty-minute Deep TMS sessions conducted five times per week over a six-week period. More than half of those in the active group achieved a 20 percent or greater reduction in symptom severity.

OCD treatment is not cleared for all TMS devices; only the Brainsway Deep TMS system (using a special coil that targets the anterior cingulate cortex) has been approved. Deep TMS is able to directly stimulate key areas of the brain at a greater depth and breadth safely and efficiently, which is why it is now considered the best option for treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (MDD).

Deep TMS treatment for OCD and MDD is available at our center conveniently located in Central Denver. We have a second location in Lakewood opening soon to treat MDD.
There is much more to share, and I would be happy to discuss our OCD treatment options with you in greater detail, as well as consult with you about a particular patient that you feel may benefit from this therapy. Please contact me, or our treatment coordinator Lindsey Davis, at 303-884-3867.
