What is Depression?
Depression is a common and sometimes serious mental disorder that negatively affects how you think, feel, act, and perceive the world around you.
According to Forbes Health, 5% of adults worldwide experience depression. However, that number is likely higher when taking into account people who have not had an official diagnosis. Research suggests that genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors play a role in depression.
Depression can happen at any age, but it is more likely to occur in adulthood and common risk factors include personal or family history of mental illness, negative life changes, trauma, and stress.
What is Accelerated TMS?
TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. TMS is a non-invasive form of brain stimulation in which a changing magnetic field is used to induce an electric current at a specific area of the brain. Think of it as a way to “jump start” parts of your brain that don’t have a lot of activity.
The average TMS treatment course is 30 sessions over 6 weeks. These sessions last between 20-40 minutes and happen once per day.
However, a more assertive treatment protocol for depression was developed and tested at Stanford University.* It included 1,800 stimulations per treatment but with 10 treatment sessions per day over a total of 5 days. This protocol has been highly effective, resulting in a 90% response/remission rate. The 90% remission rate of depression in this study is the highest ever achieved with TMS.
Accelerated TMS treatments do not require sedation, and take place in an outpatient setting. During your appointment, electromagnetic coils are placed on your head and magnetic pulses stimulate your brain in areas that control your mood.
